Facebook has been banned in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked Facebook over a competition encouraging its users to post caricatures of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) on the social networking site.

Earlier in the day, the LHC ordered authorities to block Facebook until May 31..

The depiction of any prophet is strictly prohibited in Islam as blasphemous and Muslims across the world staged angry protests over the publication of satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in European newspapers in 2006.

Just heard yesterday (30-May-2010) Facebook has been banned in Bangladesh too. Though Bangladesh is muslim majority country it has been quite liberal in the past. But it seems like the govt just want to prove to it's mostly uneducated people they are in the same side as the mullas. Really feel sad for Pakistani ans Bangladesh Facebook users who use it or keeping in touch with friends and family.

  11. Then some genius is to create another alternative location for Facebook to moderate and peace loving people of this world can use, regardless of their religion. During this time, facebook deactivate my account.

  12. Why doesn't the Pakistani government realize that this will hurt progress?  Also, how do they expect their young citizens to learn about things?  Sheltering people is never the answer.
